Drug overdose death rates in the United States have increased five-fold since 1980. Most prescription drug overdose and deaths occur due to pain.  By 2009, drug overdose deaths outnumbered deaths due to motor vehicle crashes for the first time in the U.S. Read more on drug overdoze
Acupuncture offers a great degree of pain relief for most of the people.  Personally, I see about 80% success for pain in my clinic in New York City. Acupuncturists have many other methods to address the pain besides acupuncture needles like: Chinese Cupping Therapy, Moxa (Heat Therapy - burning of herbs to warm up acupuncture points) and Chinese Herbs to promote circulation of Blood and Energy which causes pain according to Chinese Medicine Philosophy. I often see many of my patients taking 3 and more drugs to manage their health. Nobody knows what happens when you take few drugs at the same time, there are definitely could be some serious side effects that adversely effect anybody's health in a long run.

Treatments like Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs, Homeopathy, Yoga, Exercises, Proper Nutrition and Life Style Changes can offer drug free powerful solutions.

POTATOES BENEFITS AND FACTS

National Institutes of Health report that potatoes are an excellent source of fiber, vitamins and minerals that protect against cancer and promote heart-health.

1. Eating potatoes can reduce inflammation.  Potatoes are full of  carbohydrates, protein, calcium, niacin and Vitamin C. Because of the fiber in potatoes, they are soft and easily digested. The Vitamin C in potatoes make them great antioxidants which repair cells in the body. Potatoes can relieve inflammation in the intestines and digestive track.
2. Eating potatoes can increase brain function. The brain or nerve center of your body relies on several things to function, including balanced glucose levels, oxygen, Vitamin B complex, amino acids, Omega-3 and other fatty acids, among others. Potatoes contain  all these elements so your brain benefits.
3. Eating potatoes can help prevent cardiovascular disease. Potatoes are a great source of carbohydrates, protein, calcium, niacin and Vitamins C and B-complex. These properties help fight heart disease and keep blood pressure at normal levels. Potatoes also contain carotenoids, key to heart health and overall health and wellness.
4. Potatoes may offset incidence of kidney stones. There are an increasing number of studies that indicate that potatoes may have protective health benefits. For example, potatoes are rich sources of magnesium  which can offset the accumulation of calcium in the kidney.
5. Potatoes advance skin care. Potatoes have all the right stuff to optimize health and wellness. Potatoes contain Vitamins C and B-complex, potassium, magnesium, zinc and phosphorus, all excellent vitamins and minerals for your skin. Raw potatoes can be mashed and mixed with honey to make a masque for your skin. Raw potatoes can also be applied to burns and rashes to ease the swelling and pain.
PUMPKIN SEEDS BENEFITS and FACTS
1.  Heart Healthy Magnesium
One-quarter cup of pumpkin seeds contains nearly half of the recommended daily amount of magnesium, which helps the heart, proper bone and tooth formation, relaxation of your blood vessels, and proper bowel function.
Magnesium has been shown to benefit your blood pressure and help prevent sudden cardiac arrest, heart attack, and stroke, yet an estimated 80 percent of Americans are deficient in this important mineral.
2.  Zinc for Immune Support
Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of zinc (one ounce contains more than 2 mg of this beneficial mineral). Zinc is important to your body in many ways, including immunity, cell growth and division, sleep, mood, your senses of taste and smell, eye and skin health, insulin regulation, and male sexual function.
3.  Plant-Based Omega-3 Fats
Raw nuts and seeds, including pumpkin seeds, are one of the best sources of plant-based omega-3.
4.  Prostate Health
Pumpkin seeds have long been valued as an important natural food for men’s health. This is in part because of their high zinc content, which is important for prostate health (where it is found in the highest concentrations in the body), and also because pumpkin seed extracts and oils may play a role in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, or enlarged prostate).
5.  Anti-Diabetic Effects
Animal studies suggest that pumpkin seeds may help improve insulin regulation and help prevent diabetic complications by decreasing oxidative stress.4
6.  Heart and Liver Health
Pumpkin seeds, rich in healthy fats, antioxidants and fibers, may provide benefits for heart and liver health, particularly when mixed with flax seeds.6
8.  Tryptophan for Restful Sleep
Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of tryptophan, an amino acid (protein building block) that your body converts into serotonin, which in turn is converted into melatonin, the “sleep hormone.” Eating pumpkin seeds a few hours before bed, along with a carbohydrate like a small piece of fruit, may be especially beneficial for providing your body the tryptophan needed for your melatonin and serotonin production to help promote a restful night’s sleep.7
9.  Anti-Inflammatory Benefits
Pumpkin seed oil has been found to exhibit anti-inflammatory effects. One animal study even found it worked as well as the anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin in treating arthritis, but without the side effects.8
In order to preserve the healthy fats present in the seeds, pumpkin seeds should be eaten raw.

BENEFITS OF EATING ALMONDS
1.  They reduce heart attack risk.
Those who consume nuts five times a week have about a 50 percent reduction in risk of heart attack according to the Loma Linda School of Public Health.
2.  They lower ‘bad’ cholesterol.
3.  They protects artery walls from damage.
4.  Almonds help build strong bones and teeth. The phosphorus in almonds helps make this possible.
5.  They provide healthy fats and aid in weight loss:
  • Although nuts are high in fat, frequent nut eaters are thinner on average than those who almost never consume nuts. (Data from the Nurses’ Health Study)
  • Those who ate nuts at least two times per week were 31 percent less likely to gain weight than were those who never or seldom ate them in a study involving 8865 adults. (WHFood’s article on almonds)

6.  Almonds lower the rise in blood sugar and insulin after meals.
7.  They help provide good brain function.
Almonds contain riboflavin and L-carnitine, nutrients that boost brain activity and may also reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
8.  They nourish the nervous system.
According to Ayurveda, almonds help increase high intellectual level and longevity.
9.  They alkalize the body.
Almonds are the only nut and one of the few proteins that are alkaline forming.  When your body is not alkaline enough, you risk osteoporosis, poor immune function, low energy and weight gain.

Tree of Life Acupuncture 20 Year Anniversary & Oriental Medicine Day

To celebrate 20 years in the business of Tree of Life Acupuncture on Union Square, New York City & Oriental Medicine Day, for Our Loyal Clients, I would like to offer specials (see below).

In 1989, I left the computer industry and decided to go study acupuncture in Hawaii. It was a long and twisted journey as it took me later to Florida and then back to New York. I went through 3 acupuncture schools (in different states), about 6 apartments and the 'trauma' of moving back in with my parents. I worked in two restaurants for about 4 days (could not keep up and quit, especially after spilling about 1 cup of water around my neck after unsuccessful heavy handling). But I did stick around for a few years doing successful hotel reservations and hotel reservations for a big chain in Hawaii and telemarketing for a big document storage company in NJ.

Finally in 1993, I graduated and got my license to practice Acupuncture. I started by working in a doctor's office in Brooklyn and at the same time got a job as an Acupuncturist in the hospital working with heroin addicts. I still love what I do, maybe even more now and would not want to do anything else. I like helping people and improve their lives. So come and celebrate with us and improve the quality of your life. As I always say, the best time to come see me is when you have no problems, so you stay in optimum health and fully productive.

Believe it or not, there was a time when you could go to jail for practicing Acupuncture, say 30-40 years ago. Up to now, millions of Americans who prefer safe, effective and holistic medicine like Acupuncture for pain, stress and many other diseases (instead of toxic drugs), have a choice. So, I also give credits to all those who came before me and made the changes in the holistic field we all can enjoy.

Be well,

Colon Detox. Large Intestine Detoxification and Cleanse.

The Role of Large Intestine. Detoxification and Cleanse for your Health.

COLON is the largest organ in the body and in acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, large intestine is used to balance Qi (energy) and blood. Points like LI4 (between the index finger and the thumb) and LI11 (in the crease of the bent elbow on the exterior) are often used to regulate Blood Pressure, Digestion or reduce Dizziness and Vertigo.

Large Intestine has a relationship with the Lungs and both of them are largest toxins eliminating organs in the body.

If you suffer from constipation or diarrhea, your Acupuncturist may use acupuncture and/ or Chinese Herbs to help regulate your condition. Severe conditions like colitis and many autoimmune disorders may be helped by tapping into the energy and blood of the colon. Occasional colonics may help detoxifying the body as well as foods high in fiber that help move the stool.

Green vegetables, beets, ginger, avocados, lemons, flax seeds (or any seeds or nuts) can help large intestine detox and move harmful toxins out of the body and help the liver detox the rest of impurities out of the body.

Special breathing (#2 video in this will help you detox without spending a lot of time and is free. I personally do it daily):  http://www.newyorkacupuncturecenter.com/self_help_acupuncture_yoga.html)

Acupuncture Fall and Immune System

Acupuncture and your Health in the Fall

Fall in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture is associated with the element of METAL (from the theory of 5 elements: Wood, Fire, Metal, Water and Earth). Metal is represented by the Lungs and Large Intestine. Color is white, the emotion is sadness or sorrow. The Lungs control the skin and pores and are the first form of defense against exogenous pathogens like wind and cold.

Lungs are often referred to as a delicate organ, because it is sensitive to weather changes. The lungs are often associated with sadness or depression in Chinese Medicine.

Fall in New York brings drastic and volatile weather changes. Our bodies and immune system are often subjected to respiratory problems (colds, asthma and flu) in this season. So here below are a few steps to prepare yourself for seasonal changes and strengthen the immune system.

Acupuncture and Immune System There are certain Acupuncture points that stimulate your immune system. Acupuncture can adjust your energy to prepare the body for a particular season, especially the one like Fall, with constant change of temperature. Acupuncture also reduces stress and optimizes your body's defenses.

Weather Best thing you can do is not to expose your body to the wind and extreme weather changes during Fall season. If you dress appropriately for the weather, you are less likely to catch a cold. So scarf, hat and appropriate shoes will all do when the temperature drops.

Food As it gets colder, you need to cut down on cold (energy) foods like salads and eat warmer energetic foods like chicken, hot soups, etc. Cook with ginger (or scallions, garlic, cinnamon). Seeds and nuts (I personally like walnuts best as they are also good for the Kidneys and the Brain which come into play in the Winter - Kidney Season).

Nothing like warm soup on a cold day

Garlic has antibacterial and immune system properties and thins blood. It disperses stagnant energy by promoting circulation of energy in your body and the Lungs. It is also very useful for those flu seasons. Garlic has antibacterial properties and gets you back on your feet quicker after flu or any other respiratory illness.

One way to consume garlic is to boil it in water and and then drink it as tea. You can add flavor enhancing herbs like: Mint, Hibiscus Flower, Cinnamon, etc. and there you go, you have a natural boost to the circulatory cardiac and immune systems.

Cooking with/ or eating Garlic, Ginger, Scallions/ Onions is OK in moderation as they circulate lung energy and energy in general. They can also act as antibacterial substances and promote circulation and reduce fatigue and inflammation.

DRINKS Drinking a warm glass of water or tea with a generous squeeze of lemon is a great way to detox your Liver and enhance intake of Vitamin C which may help your immune system as well. Consuming warmer liquids is your way of helping your body to maintain body temperature at cold temperatures. Also warm drinks help circulation and sweating which in turn helps cool the body in warm climates. In some tropical climates, people drink hot tea even in extreme heat, believe it or not.

Chinese Herbs There is a number of Herbs that can be used to strengthen your immune system. However, I would strongly discourage self medication as Chinese Herbs are very strong and can turn against you. It is best to come to a Chinese Medicine Practitioner. Spicy herbs can make you sweat and sweating in initial stages can "push" the cold out of your body. They can also act as antibacterial substances and promote circulation and reduce fatigue and and inflammation. (consult your MD or herbalist, especially if you are taking prescription medications)
To Improve your health and quality of life may we suggest you view our 2-3 minute Yoga breathing.  Particular ailments like fertility, immune system, stress and insomnia or back pain can benefit as well.

Acupuncture for seasonal allergies. Allergy relief with acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

Spring in Acupuncture is associated with the liver.

Liver helps store blood and important for woman's reproductive health as it controls the menstrual cycle. Often responsible for fibroids growth, various abdominal pains etc. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs successfully can treat reproductive and fertility problems.

Because the color of the liver is green and the taste is sour, eating green goods is good for liver health  (avocados, green peppers, green apples, lemons, limes etc).

acupuncture for allergies

Emotion for the liver is anger, so if you find yourself being irritable or angry, then its  a sing of your liver imbalance. Acupuncture can help relax and circulate the energy
Liver has an energetic relationship with the Gall Bladder and the Heart and is responsible for spreading the energy through the body. Prolonged liver problems can lead irritability, depression, anxiety, irregular heart beat and many others.

acupuncture allergy treatment

Liver is a modern person's disease as it is sensitive to toxins, alcohol and drugs (recreational or prescription). So drink in moderation and remember that medications are not substitutes for healthy nutrition and life style.

Liver is also responsible for seasonal allergies. An estimated 50 Million Americans suffer from different types of allergies. That is 1 in every 5, including indoor and outdoor allergies, skin, food etc. Allergic reactions are on a rise from 1980's

Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs and Homeopathy treat allergies, indulging  running nose, red watery eyes and even skin allergies or skin conditions. Click more to read on allergies

MEANING of DO NO HARM

DO NO HARM
It seems like an easy thing to "do no harm", especially if you think, you are a nice and conscious individual.  We know that long ago doctors were sworn by the Hippocrates oath to do no harm.  It must have meant do no physical harm for the physicians practicing medicine of those early times. I bet to this time lots of MDs think of it this way as well.

So what happens, for example when a doctor tells his cancer patient that he/she has six months to live ?  Do they ask them to die ?  Are they just being honest by projecting their own experience and beliefs ? As a practicing acupuncturist, I often think about what I say and try to correct my wording, so my clients, especially those with hypochondriac tendencies do not get overwhelmed.

1. Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word for non injury
Yogis, Buddhists etc, or any one practicing this philosophy must take great care not to injure any living substance, even unknowingly. Gandhi extended ahimsa into the political sphere. Dr. Martin Luther King also practiced non violence through peaceful protests.

2. How can you hurt someone and what it really means.
It is easier to control physical actions of non injury. How about hurting someone by words or just by thinking ?
Words can hurt more than physical pain, we all had our share of pain in this area.

In Yoga it's often said: "As you think, so you become".
So if you have angry or offensive thoughts, then you are guilty as charged. Think about it.

Conclusion:  I would personally think that verbal pain could be of greater harm or "bad karma" than physical.  And harm in a form of thought ?  How does that hurt someone ?  Well, if thought is material then you materialize your state of mind and project your state of mind onto another living, breathing organism.

Recovery and Reversal
If you already executed an action that hurt or "spoiled the energy" between you and the other party or parties, then you can do a good deed and reverse or lessen "the damage".  Same is for negative thinking, if a bad thought has been formed, the only thing you can do is generate the opposite positive thought and minimize the physical, mental and spiritual "harm".

Let me know what you think or what your experiences have been.
Find below the link to some Yogic breathing and few Yoga postures that may help you get positive.  #1 Video, would be my first choice for negative thinking as it balances left and right hemisphere of the brain, and that is a good thing.  Share this link with someone who may need it, we all know a few people.
