I recently saw a post on an acupuncture discussion board about needing depth in acupuncture sessions.
I remember seeing Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart getting acupuncture on their show. Well, it was extremely shallow and was done in that manner not to make them scream, I guess on national TV.
Some practitioners were telling stories how gentle needling produced great results and other acupuncturists described their acupuncture needling depth as being adjusted to their patient's needs.
Chinese acupuncture styles like MastTung Acupuncture, or balance method of Dr. Tan, may use deeper needling.
There is an old acupuncture saying, "for a 3-year-old shoulder pain, use a 3-inch acupuncture needle".
1. If the pathology is chronic, then your acupuncturist may needle deeply up to 3 inches and if there is enough tissue depth.
2. If the acupuncture distal pointed selected is far away from the original problem's location.
3. Deeper needling produces stronger tissue stimulation and better results and if the client can tolerate it then it's ok.
4. I personally needle according to patient's tolerance and/or maximum therapeutic effect, and if I use deep acupuncture needling, then I educate my acupuncture patients about the possibility of better results.
4.5 Also gradual deeper insertion is more comfortable for some acupuncture patients.
