As I was squeezing lime juice into my glass of water, and started to cook Quinoa, I decided to write about the benefits of those two and remind ourselves to eat better and healthier.

Limes have many health benefits.
Limes came from India. Limes are grown in abundance in Florida and California.

Limes can protect against colds
They have a lot of vitamin C. Some people and Mayo clinic believe vitamin C may reduce duration of colds and prevent its spread.
 Few studies suggest antibiotic properties.

Prevents Cancer.
Some studies show that flavonoids can prevent cancer and limes have it.

Lime Juice prevents formation of Kidney Stones.
Long term studies indicate that drinking 120ml of lemon or lime juice can prevent kidney stones.

Maintain Digestive Health
Sour tasting juice can stimulate digestion.

Help Detox Liver.
According to Chinese Medicine sour taste has to to with the liver.  Also color Green is the color associated with the Liver and the Gall Bladder.
Health Benefits of Quinoa.
Quinoa is actually a seed pronounced "keen-wa".

In Chinese Medicine Quinoa is can tonify Qi (vital energy).

Can also tonify Yin and Yang
It is a high quality protein and has 9 amino acids. Has more protein than rice and millet or wheat.

Good source of riboflavin, which in studies was shown to help reduce migraines.

Improves energetic metabolism in the brain and muscles  cells.

Saponins in quinoa promote skin healing.
Used for that in South America.

Gluten Free, because it is not related to wheat or grain.

Anti-inflammatory.  Many animal tests suggest that it is an anti-inflammatory food. There are many other health benefits to this superfood. So why not cook some today.

Acupuncture for stress reduction
Acupuncture can treat stress, anxiety, insomnia and even depression. So here is tip on how to do acupressure on yourself.  Nothing can ruin your day, health or Life like stress. We all know and have been there. Stress can be a single contributing factor in major emotional, mental and physical problems. Additionally it can seriously damage your health in not properly handled.

We do not always know when stress comes, but we can deal with it when it arrives. There is an acupuncture point called P6 on the acupuncture pericardium channel. It is often used for stress, insomnia and anxiety. It will not substitute a regular acupuncture cession, but it may provide a relief in stressful times. This point has a connection to the Heart, Stomach and the Liver, so pressing on it may give you some peace.

Point location: Look at inside of your palm, then about 1.5 inches above the inner crease of your wrist in the middle between 2 tendons. Press with your thumb and hold for 30 seconds with 10 seconds interval and repeat 3 times. Click here for more videos on stress reduction

Breathing for stress reduction
Best thing to do when you're stressed is to focus on the belly button area (acupuncture point called either Ren 6 or Dan Tien about 2 inches directly below your belly button and between your spine and stomach). Breath is the connection between your body and your mind.

So by breathing into this point consciously and regulating your breath will regulate your body and your mind. You should become aware of your breath and if thoughts come to mind, you go back to breathing. Breathing should be through the nose not the mouth, comfortable and natural. The only thing that is needed is breath awareness.

Acupuncture Case Study:
A 73 year old woman, who is also a lung cancer survivor came to my acupuncture office for  back pain. Her surgeon advised her to remove 2 vertebrae and the procedure did not guarantee results and would take long surgery and anesthesia hours and recovery time.

After inserting a few needles in her scalp in about 2-3 min time,  I asked her to bend forward and she improved by about 30% At the end of the 1st cession the patient improved over 80% (it was a good day for both of us)

I told her she may want to wait with the surgery ( I also said something else that I do not want to write here about her Dr.(#^*)

During 2nd phone appointment confirmation, she tanked me and told me, he felt 85% better.
I was very happy for her and effects acupuncture brought, I would think she felt even happier. She is coming back for her 2nd visit on Monday, can't wait.

There you go, another happy beginning (not ending).

Hurricane Sandy - Glass Half Full and Lessons Learned.
Turning lemon into lemonade
I thought Hurricane Sandy would be another media overblown average type event. But it was much worse than I expected it to be.

Hundreds of cars with blown out windows and flooded interior in my Brighton Beach neighborhood in Brooklyn (mandatory evacuation zone A). I did not evacuate, just stocked up on emergency supplies. Residential buildings had no water and electricity. I live on 21st floor and had to take stairs every time, to get in and out of the building.

I could not travel to my Acupuncture office on Union Square, New York City and see my patients, was losing income and had a lot of time on my hands.

I was looking for a learning experience from the event and I found many.  To make lemonade out of hurricane Sandy, I focused on non-attachments ( as its is a main theme in all Eastern philosophies. As a practicing Yogi and Acupuncturist of many years, that seemed appropriate).

Going up the 21 flights of stairs became my "StairMaster" and I found out that on a good day, I can go all the way up without pausing and that was a good thing for my fitness levels.

My old car was toast and that could be good news, since I did not use it for months and was debating if I even need it since, the trains in NYC gotten pretty good.

Electricity robbed me of  TV and that gave me lots of time on my hands to spend time with my wife and to come up with lots of creative ways for entertainment. I read from my iPad, exchanged massage and practiced Tango under candlelight.

I also spent a lot of time outdoors jogging and exercising and found creative ways to wash myself without running water.  I would go to one of the very few buildings with electricity intact to charge my cellphone and my iPad. When the lights came up and we had electricity, I was happy.

Next came the water, only cold though. Cold showers in the morning were chilling, but afterwards I felt invigorated and happy and afterall, better than no water at all.

One thing I was missing was my Acupuncture needles to turn the whole Sandy hurricane ordeal into a more spa like situation as I did on my last vacation in Mexico.
.
The next day, triple delight and Nirvana, hot water, elevators and TV all working. Netflix and CNN, here I come! Time off from work I turned into a one star (*) vacation.

What I learned from this hurricane is how little we need to be happy and how quickly it is not enough. Focusing on simple things in life brings us happiness. Wanting more and more sets us up for disappointments.

What have you learned ? Leave a comment or share my story.

Mark Moschchinsky.

acupuncture channels
In Chinese Medicine kidneys control the brain and the heart houses the Spirit.  Worry is attributed to the spleen and anger has to do with the liver and last, but not least sadness is the emotion of the Lungs.

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can balance your body's vital energy and restore your mind and body to proper balance.

I recently came back from vacation.  While relaxing and being stress free, I was thinking of how I could take parts of this state of mind and maintain in my daily  routine. And here is what I came up with and want to share with you.

1. Start your day with a little exercise routine 3-15 min (depending on your time availability before work day. Few Yoga postures or breathing exercises www.Yoga. few sets of push ups or sit ups and a bit of stretching or whatever gets you going.)

2.  Take a walk near the ocean, beach or park (Central Park, Prospect Park, Brighton Beach etc.) daily or weekly. If you have no time before work, you can do the walk after work or on days off.
acupuncture for stress
my vacation breakfast meal

3. Have a good meal and eat it in a calm and relaxing environment.   DO not eat your lunch at your desk. Leave your desk and go eat outside ( near the park, invite a friend for lunch)

4. Do 1 good unselfish thing for yourself and your partner or best friend every day.

5. Let someone else do something for your well being or peace of mind.  (Massage, Acupuncture etc.) Meet a friend or talk to someone who puts you at ease or makes you laugh.

In 6 days that I was away, I gave myself about 4 acupuncture sessions for prevention, relaxation and longevity and turned my stay into a SPA like experience. (Did consider massage, but last two experiences made me opt out for acupuncture).

As many of you know, acupuncture can treat and prevent stressful conditions and reduce wear and tear on your body and mind and spirit. What you don't know or don't do is the best time for acupuncture is when you have no problems and come to maintain your body in optimum shape. (Usually for prevention 1 to 2 x month will do).

Summer in Chinese Medicine is a Yang season and associated with the HEART organ and the color for the heart is red.

The heart in Chinese Medicine houses the Spirit, which means mental faculties like: memory,  anxiety and insomnia can be attributed to the heart function, in addition to regular Western function of pumping blood.

Conditions like high blood pressure, irritability and skin conditions (in the summer) can be attributed to the heart functions in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. The emotion for the heart is laughter. If someone laughs inappropriately and very frequently, that may be a sign of a heart imbalance. Summer is around the corner and with warmer weather we all want to look good on the beach and in summer clothes.  So it is a good time to get in shape, adjust your diet and exercise routine.

My lunch, all organic from home.

Our body is about 70% water. Water can boil or freeze.  So as the weather gets warmer our bodies get warmer, we should eat cooler foods in hot weather.  It means more fruits (possibly less sweet fruits) and vegetables and less meat and chicken. (meats have warm energy and generally much harder to digest).  Lighten up on dinner. Make dinner portions smaller or even divide it into 2 smaller portions.
Here is more information on weight loss  http://www.newyorkacupuncturecenter.com/looseweight.html

Acupuncture can help weight loss by reducing food cravings: sweets, salty and adjust and expedite metabolism, in addition to regular problems like: stress, anxiety and pains.  Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs can help detox your body and optimize digestion for better absorption and reduce or eliminate abdominal discomfort. green once.

2. Eat smaller portions with healthy snacks in between (apple, carrot, smoothie, nuts etc.)

helps fill the stomach and reduce hunger and cravings

4. Have reasonable daily and weekly exercise routine to burn calories and stay in shape
5. Replace your dinner with a smoothie or fruit or cut it half !

1.   60 second warm up
Do light stretches or breathing exercise or walking vigorously around the room

2.  Do Sit ups:
1 to 3 sets.  Rest between sets up to 30 seconds depending on your fitness level.

Do 1st set do sitting down moderately then rest.
then do 2nd set sitting going lower and staying 3-6 seconds
3rd set you can sit even deeper.

3. Floor Push Ups:
do 1 to 3 sets with intensity growing towards the 3rd set.

4. Warm down:
After you're done, do deep breathing and a few stretches.
