MEANING of DO NO HARM

DO NO HARM
It seems like an easy thing to "do no harm", especially if you think, you are a nice and conscious individual.  We know that long ago doctors were sworn by the Hippocrates oath to do no harm.  It must have meant do no physical harm for the physicians practicing medicine of those early times. I bet to this time lots of MDs think of it this way as well.

So what happens, for example when a doctor tells his cancer patient that he/she has six months to live ?  Do they ask them to die ?  Are they just being honest by projecting their own experience and beliefs ? As a practicing acupuncturist, I often think about what I say and try to correct my wording, so my clients, especially those with hypochondriac tendencies do not get overwhelmed.

1. Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word for non injury
Yogis, Buddhists etc, or any one practicing this philosophy must take great care not to injure any living substance, even unknowingly. Gandhi extended ahimsa into the political sphere. Dr. Martin Luther King also practiced non violence through peaceful protests.

2. How can you hurt someone and what it really means.
It is easier to control physical actions of non injury. How about hurting someone by words or just by thinking ?
Words can hurt more than physical pain, we all had our share of pain in this area.

In Yoga it's often said: "As you think, so you become".
So if you have angry or offensive thoughts, then you are guilty as charged. Think about it.

Conclusion:  I would personally think that verbal pain could be of greater harm or "bad karma" than physical.  And harm in a form of thought ?  How does that hurt someone ?  Well, if thought is material then you materialize your state of mind and project your state of mind onto another living, breathing organism.

Recovery and Reversal
If you already executed an action that hurt or "spoiled the energy" between you and the other party or parties, then you can do a good deed and reverse or lessen "the damage".  Same is for negative thinking, if a bad thought has been formed, the only thing you can do is generate the opposite positive thought and minimize the physical, mental and spiritual "harm".

Let me know what you think or what your experiences have been.
Find below the link to some Yogic breathing and few Yoga postures that may help you get positive.  #1 Video, would be my first choice for negative thinking as it balances left and right hemisphere of the brain, and that is a good thing.  Share this link with someone who may need it, we all know a few people.

Maximize Your Work Experience.

Beat the Rat race. Use  your work time creatively and to your advantage.
We use a good portion of our time at work, so it is only smart to customize it to your personal needs and work smarter. I used to work as an employee for a major bank, brokerage companies on Wall Street and Hospitals and Clinics as a consultant and as an employee. Now for the past 20 years, I am a small business owner in private acupuncture practice. Here are a few things that make my work experience better:

1. Work Smarter.
Do same with less. Look at your daily routine and where the "fat" can be cut out. May be you can find a better way to do repetitive work.
2. Relax, it is Lunch Time.
A. Use your lunch time as a little vacation between 2 halves of the day.
Eat your lunch away from your desk. It creates change of pace and reduces work fatigue. Invite a friend to get a nice conversation going. Eat in a green environment (park, waterfall, etc). Use time left from lunch to walk in a relaxed manner, unfocus your eyes and relax.
B. Bring your own lunch, save time to go to the gym, or do 3-15 minutes in exercises or if you really have not time, here is Yogic breathing (often done by me, on daily basis) that takes as little as 1 min to do. Click this link and do #1 and/or #2 video  self_help_acupuncture_yoga

3. Enhance your work environment. Rearrange things to your individual needs (chair, computer screen, pillow for your back, track ball instead of a mouse, etc). Bring plants you like and take occasional few minutes to look at them to relax your eyes and mind.  Bring pictures of loved ones or vacation pictures to look at. Write inspirational messages that address your daily or special challenges.

*** I personally do well by exercising during lunch or when I have a window.  I also like taking a walk at the green market or nearby park on Union Square.  If I feel run down, I do acupuncture on myself, sleep with needles for 15-20 min. and get the second wind.  Most often, I do "Breath of Fire" to remove sluggishness and generate new energy. If I am upset or angry, I use "alternate nostril breathing".

In Chinese Medicine and acupuncture  craving for sweets is related to the Spleen and Stomach. Too much sugar or sweets lead to dampness, sluggishness and inability to of your digestive tract to absorb and process food efficiently and may result in weight gain.

Certain acupuncture points can reduce sugar cravings and optimize metabolism for better digestion. I would recommend to substitute sweets for fruits.   Bananas (when ripe) are sweet, pineapple, apples, mangoes. If you noticed most of the fruits I suggested are yellow because yellow is the color for Spleen and Stomach.

Stomach has a connection with Large Intestine and Large Intestine relates to the Liver, so a whole domino effect can tip the scale of your Yin and Yang, Read more on Acupuncture for Weight Loss
